The Investment and Governance Division of the Office of Information Technology invites you, your staff and your business colleagues to attend a Technology Briefing on Service Oriented Architecture, on Thursday, June 14, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. in the Lobby Hearing Room, Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 East Broad Street, Columbus.

Presentation: The Challenges of SOA in Mainstream Adoption
Presenter:      Roy Schulte, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst, Gartner Research

Vendors are well into the transition to SOA, but user companies are experiencing varying degrees of difficulty because of the complexities inherent in distributed computing. Companies pass through four stages as they adopt SOA, from experimentation through widespread use.  At each stage, different issues arise and must be conquered. This presentation will present problem-solving approaches that help mainstream enterprises succeed at each stage of SOA maturity. Issues discussed will include:

  • How are companies with successful SOA programs overcoming the difficulties encountered in the early stages of SOA implementation?
  • What are the seven guidelines for good SOA application design?
  • What is the role of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)?
  • How can companies best deal with heterogeneity in application software and technical infrastructure?
  • Should an IT organization create an Integration Competency Center or a SOA Center of Excellence?
  • How can architects decide between event-driven architecture (EDA) and interactive SOA?

Roy Schulte is a vice president and Distinguished Analyst in Gartner Research on the Application Strategy and Governance team.  His specialties include event processing and Enterprise Service Bus.  Mr. Schulte co-authored the 1996 Gartner report that introduced the term SOA to the industry.  He also originated research into the field of message brokers, coined the term business activity monitoring (BAM), and wrote the first analyst reports on the enterprise service bus (ESB).  Prior to joining Gartner, Mr. Schulte held various positions with Digital Equipment Corporation, Data General, and Lahey Clinic including product manager in financial systems engineering, system programmer, database administrator, application programmer, software product manager and manager of competitive analysis.

Mr. Schulte holds a B. S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and M.S. from MIT’s Sloan School of Management.
