Issue Date: April 2006

The Ohio Office of Information Technology recently issued a revision to Ohio IT Policy ITP-E.8 "Limitations on the Use of Publicly Owned Computer Hardware and Software.” The revised ITP-E.8 is entitled “Use of Internet, E-mail and Other IT Resources,” and has an effective date of March 20, 2006.

The revised state policy requires state agencies to establish an Internet, e-mail and IT resources use policy consistent with state policy and ensure that state employees, contractors, temporary personnel and other agents of the state who use and administer state computer and telecommunications systems adhere to the policy. Agencies are required to submit acceptable use policies to OIT within 120 days of the effective date of the policy and report ongoing substantive updates. Therefore, the deadline for agencies to submit their acceptable use policies to OIT is July 21, 2006.

Agency policy is required to describe the extent, if any, to which personal use is allowed. When establishing their own policy, agencies have the option either to adopt the state policy as their own or further restrict the duration, frequency and nature of personal use to meet individual business requirements.
